Monastery of St. George the Victorious – Rajcica and St. John – Bigorski

Rajcica monastery is located next to the town of Debar in western Macedonia. Built over the Debar Lake as part of the economic St. John – Bigorski. In the monastery there is a church dedicated to St. George the Victorious built in the 19th century.

This is a convent with six nuns. The name of the monastery tells Raj (chica) or paradisiacal place where always come back. Just 15 km north of Rajcica located male Monastery of St. John the Baptist. His allowance Bigorski received a travertine stone from which it is built. It was built in 1020 by the monk John, but completely destroyed in the 16th century by the Turks.

The entire complex is now only a small church restored in 1743. At St. John the Baptist, located in the grounds of the monastery is one of the most beautiful iconostasis in the world made of walnut wood and which has been declared a national treasure in Macedonia.
