South of Ohrid Lake there is the most beautiful part of the coast which abounds with beautiful scenery. Placed on a rock that rises high above the lake is situated the St. Naum monastery. It was built in 900 by St. Naum personally, who dedicated it to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. St. Naum was a disciple of Cyril and Methodius and St. Kliment Ohridski.
St. Naum died in 910 and was buried in the church. The monastery extends a wonderful view of the lake and the city Pogradec which is situated on the coast of the Albanian side.
Under the monastery, a sandy beach is stretching with fine yellow sand, and just a few meters south are the sources of the river Drim forming a small pond with two natural islands. The island has one of the restaurant where you can try the specialties of the Macedonian cuisine and the other island is a nest of waders. You can arrive at the monastery via boat or by road which extends on the slopes of the National Park “Galicica”.
